The Canada Club is excited to announce that it will be attending a talk with Dr Rose Taylor, Curator for the North America collections, for a talk exploring collections from kanata (now Canada). Check your email for instructions on how to register.
Taylor will introduce the Indigenous collections made by First Nations, Métis and Inuit communities stewarded at the British Museum. Through remarkable objects and their stories, she'll examine materiality and traditional ecological knowledge, themes of encounter, resilience and adaption. Taylor will also introduce the distinctive visual aesthetics of the Pacific Northwest coast and the Arctic regions, highlighting artistic traditions that continue to thrive today.
Alongside the collections themselves, Taylor will also highlight some of the Museum's ongoing partnerships with Indigenous communities and introduce several Indigenous community museums. She will explore the roles of museums and how working in collaboration with Indigenous communities can (re)activate collections, develop meaningful relationships and knowledge exchanges, and shift curatorial and care practices.
There will also be an opportunity to put your questions to Taylor.
